'CLOSE THE GAP'

When work started on redecoration of the church, loose plaster was removed uncovering large gaps, up to a foot wide and about 2 feet deep, between the west wall and the north and south walls.

The 'CLOSE THE GAP' project set out to raise £22,000 to carry out the repair work. Large stainless steel ties were needed between the north and south walls and the west window. These were to be hidden inside the existing stonework. New drains were also required to take rainwater well away from the building.

GRANTS

The routes to raising the money to fund the repairs included the following:

English Heritage Grant.
St. Mary's is a Grade 2 building and at the start of the project only Grade 2* buildings in Hambleton District were eligable.
An application to upgrade the church to Grade 2* was not practical as there no specific features which would justify the change
Insurance There was a possible claim on the church's insurance but this was not succesful
Hambleton
District
Council
The project did not meet the criteria for a grant as a significant amount of money had already been raised when the application was considered.
