We have enjoyed an eventful and productive Spring Term here at Appleton Wiske Community Primary School. Our children have made the most of their opportunities and continue to excel in a range of areas.
Trips In February, our Year 5/6 children had a fantastic time on their residential visit to East Barnby – they enjoyed canoeing, orienteering, gauge walking and lots of other adventurous activities. It was lovely to see them in a different setting so that they could develop valuable skills such as teamwork.
Also in February, our Year 4 children attended a very interesting robotics workshop and learned how to programme devices – they had a great time applying their computing knowledge to a real life scenario. In March, our Year 6 children took part in two events – a Spelling Bee and a School Debate (held at County Hall) – both of which involved competing with other schools. The children who represented Appleton Wiske were outstanding and made us extremely proud.
French Workshop and Red Nose Day
Also in March, our Year 3 children attended a French workshop, where they were encouraged to develop their understanding of key words and phrases. Events We celebrated this year’s World Book Day by dressing up in onesies and pyjamas – the children enjoyed being taught by different teachers and working in their school teams on a range of bookthemed activities.
Red Nose Day
On the 24th March, we celebrated Red Nose Day by dressing up in mis-matched clothes and raised a good amount of money for this important charity.
We have some very talented young sports stars at Appleton Wiske and they have certainly put us on the map this term.
They enjoyed taking part in Skip 2 B Fit, Box 2 Fit and Judo workshops, and they particularly enjoyed their visit from Anna Pollock. Anna is an RAF veteran who has taken part in the Invictus Games – she was inspirational and made the children realise that anything is possible with a positive attitude and hard work.
We have also taken part in several sporting competitions, such as hockey, gymnastics and athletics, and enjoyed great success. Friends of the School On the 16th February, the ‘Friends’ of the school hosted a pub quiz at the Lord Nelson – it was well attended and everybody enjoyed the evening.
On Saturday 18th March, parents/carers and friends of the school helped to improve the outside area by painting fences, gardening and cleaning the entrance to the school – it was a successful event and we are grateful for all the support we received.
On Friday 31st March, we held an Easter Bunny Drive – again this was well attended and we had a fantastic time.
