Play Safe this Summer

As the summer holidays are now upon us please can parents pass on the following messages to their children to ensure the safety of all residents of Appleton Wiske.

a) We have received reports of children climbing on the roof of the pavilion at the playing field. This is a fragile roof and is NOT safe for climbing on.

b) Cyclists – The Highway Code states you must NOT cycle on pavements. while the law applies to all, guidance has been issued to allow the police to show discretion to younger children cycling on the footway for whom cycling on the road would not be a safe option.

Children should, however, always be mindful of and courteous to anyone using the footway which may involve politely making their presence known if approaching from behind, slowing significantly or dismounting to allow pedestrians to pass.

c) Cyclists should keep both hands on the handlebars except when signalling or changing gear and you should not carry anything that may affect their balance or may get tangled with chains or wheels.

d) Cyclists should not ride in a dangerous, careless or inconsiderate manner.

e) Scooters – when using scooters in the village please be aware of your surroundings and other road users and pedestrians.

f) When playing ball games on areas of village green please be mindful of cars, vans, tractors etc. on the road. DO NOT RUN OUT ONTO THE ROAD WITHOUT STOPPING AND LOOKING BOTH WAYS.
