According to the “Elgin” road works and closures map published on the 17th September, the road from Appleton Wiske to Deighton, the road from Appleton Wiske to Welbury, the road from Appleton Wiske to Worsall and Picton and Front Street are to be closed from the 18th September to the 23rd September.
Changes to the routine collection dates cover the UCI Road World Championships in Northallerton on the 25th September; Christmas and New Year arrangements for 2019; Good Friday in 2020; Early May (V.E. Day Commemoration) 2020; Spring Bank Holiday and August Bank Holiday in 2020.
The AGM of the Friends of St. Mary’s will take place in the Church on Monday 23rd September. In additions to the reports on the past year’s events and activities, there will be an opportunity to share “Thoughts from the floor”.
The road between the bridge over the river Wiske and Deighton will be closed for 6 working days from the 18th September. It should be possible to use the road over the week-end but it’s unlikely that there will be access whilst the work is being undertaken. Whilst the closure is inconvenient, the outcome should restore the road surface to a reasonable condition and deal with the section which floods whenever there is a moderate amount of rain.
Saturday 19th October is the annual opportunity to join the team who will be giving the churchyard its autumn tidy-up. There will be a variety of tasks for almost everyone who would like to support this worthwhile event.
If you can bring your own tools to suit whatever you’d like to do then feel free though there will be some gardening tools available. There might even be some refreshments to help restore your stamina.

Simon Cooper and Richard Johnson became members of the Parish Council at the 2nd September meeting. Their co-option returns the council to its full complement of 7 members.
This year’s Hog Roast on the August Bank Holiday Monday was treated to one of those rare August hot and sunny days. The profusion of umbrellas and gazebos provided plenty of shade whilst the diners enjoyed their lunch.
